People all over the world are preparing to show their appreciation for the nursing profession this month in the run up to Nurses’ Day on May 12.

In the UK for example, the RCN is helping to lead celebrations to mark Florence Nightingale’s birthday by collecting members’ inspirational stories about their work and publishing them online. Senior nurses, however, may find it harder than usual to enter into the spirit of the festivities given the latest Frontline First report from the college.

According to the report, there are now almost 4,000 fewer senior nursing posts in the NHS than four years ago (see page 6). Staff in bands 7 and 8 have been seen as ‘disposable’, the college claims, and a quick way to save money and, as these staff disappear, so too do clinical knowledge and leadership. Dean Royles, chief executive of NHS Employers, which describes itself as ‘the voice of employers in the NHS’, thinks otherwise, however.

NURSING MANAGEMENT

Senior nurses are expert co-ordinators of complex care and act as experienced role models for more junior staff members

Nick Lipley Editor

He dismisses the RCN statistics as ‘simplified figures’, suggesting that they fail to take account of ‘under-appreciated’ staff such as physiotherapists, dietitians and occupational therapists. What we need, Mr Royles says, is a ‘sophisticated debate’ about the type of skill mix that achieves the best outcomes for patients and service users. I am sure we all appreciate his timely warning against being simplistic. But it’s difficult to ignore the simplicity of the RCN message, that ‘reckless policy is draining the NHS of experience’. It is difficult, too, to see senior nursing staff in bands 7 and 8 as being anything other than indispensible; they are expert co-ordinators of complex care and experienced role models for more junior staff in nursing and other professional groups working in health care. This May 12 we need more than ever to publicise the value of senior nursing staff and how the profession more generally improves the lives of millions of people around the world.

Our mission Nursing Management inspires and shares professional excellence in nursing leadership and patient care. The journal is editorially independent and opinions expressed in it do not necessarily reflect the policy of the RCN, nor that of any contributor’s employing organisation, unless specifically stated.
