Introduction Since the previous report (Nadeau et al. 1991a), considerable progress has been made in the development of the genetic map for Chromosome (Chr) 14. Map density has doubled, and several new loci in the distal half of the chromosome have been identified. In this report, we reevaluate the status of genetic, cytogenetic, physical, and comparative maps.

Original description of Chr 14 loci A list of loci located on Chr 14, together with references to the original description, is provided in Table 1. Also included are 'old' gene symbols that have been replaced, recommended reference loci, genetic map localizations, locus type, methods used for assessing the phenotype, symbol and location of the human homolog, and selected mapping references.

Cytogenetic map A list of reciprocal translocations and Robertsonian translocations is provided in Fig. 1. There are no new listings or new data about these aberrations. Cytogenetic assignments are also illustrated in Fig. 1. The new assignments are Ctla-7 distal to Tcra by in situ hybridization (Jenne et al. 1991) and Rarb to band A (Mattei et al. 1991). Both localizations are consistent with linkage assignments.

Synteny assignments and somatic cell resources New synteny assignments are Cchlla2 (Chin et al. 1991), Gjb-2 (Hsieh et al. 1991b), Glud (Tzimagiorgis

*Chair of Committee for Mouse Chromosome 14

et al. 1991), Gnrh (Williamson et al. 1991), and Htr-2 (Hsieh et al. 1991a; Sparkes et al. 1991). The synteny assignments of Nfl and Tcra have been confirmed (Williamson et al. 1991). No new somatic cell resources have been reported. New data make the synteny assignment for Trp53ps ambiguous. Although somatic cell hybridization analysis suggests a location on Chr 14 (Czosnek et al., 1984), a Trp53-ps simple sequence length polymorphism shows linkage to several loci on Chr 17 in the BXD RI strains (Aitman et al. 1991). The basis for this ambiguity is uncertain.

Recombinant inbred strains The strain distribution for each Chr 14 locus that has been typed in recombinant inbred (RI) strains is listed in Table 2. Some lines appear to have double crossovers involving a single locus only. In our experience, these sometimes represent mistyping (Nadeau et al. 1991b). We recommend removal of two loci, amd (Traystman et al. 1991) and D14J! (Nadeau et al. 1992a), from the Chr 14 map. When the proper statistical test is used (Silver and Buckler 1986), the evidence for linkage to other Chr 14 in the AXB and BXA RI strains is not statistically significant.

Congenic strains A remarkable observation has been made with a strain congenic for a Chr 17 locus. B10.A(18)R is a congenic strain in which the H-2D a allele was genetically transferred from the 129/J strain to the C57BL/10 host strain. This strain also has a portion of the Tcra-W locus from 129/J (Nakajima et al. 1992). This 129derived segment does not extend to the closely linked gene Rib-1 (Fig. 2). This appears to be one of the few examples of a strain that is coincidentally congenic for
