As a Muslim nurse, I appreciated this gesture of inclusion from the UK’s largest nursing organisation. It enabled us to enjoy every minute of what was a hugely dynamic and enjoyable event. Zeba Arif, via email

Poor practice has to be addressed, managed, and stamped out, but this should be done by managers, local authorities, the Care Quality Commission and bodies such as the RCN. The use of cameras is not the answer or the right way forward. Donato Tallo, via email

MY WORKING HOURS PROVE THAT DISTRICT NURSES DO WORK AT NIGHT In a story about immigration legislation threatening the supply of care home nursing staff (news June 3), Registered Nursing Home Association chief executive Frank Ursell said nursing homes will have to revert to residential homes if there are not enough nursing staff. He said that care would have to be provided by district nursing services, which do not operate at night. How wrong he is. District nurses provide 24-hour care, 365 days a year. I work from 19.45 to 08.15, and we see up to 300 patients per month in our borough in the West Midlands. That is 300 patients that do not require an ambulance to take them to A&E. Denise Williams, district nurse clinical lead, West Midlands

THE USE OF CAMERAS IS THE WRONG WAY TO EXPOSE POOR PRACTICE With recent news reports and discussions focusing on filming taking place in nursing and care homes – both covertly and openly – greater understanding is required about why this is not a good idea. The use of audio and visual recording equipment is an invasion of privacy, and it is all too easy in this media-driven world for video clips to be misinterpreted. While there are some evil people working in care homes, using cameras to film care and treatment can allow for widespread misrepresentation of actions and interventions, and well-meaning and caring staff may be accused of unkind or inappropriate behaviour when this is not the case.

ANYONE OUT THERE FROM UNION COLLEGE HOSPITAL SET 277 OF 1985? This year is the 30th anniversary of the University College Hospital (UCH) set 277, a set of 16 nurses who trained together in 1985 to become registered adult nurses. Many of us remain RCN members in our current roles, but we have lost touch with many of the set. We are planning to hold a reunion, hopefully at UCH, on Saturday August 22 and would love as many of the set as possible to be present. If this is you, and you would like to attend the reunion, please get in contact with me at [email protected] or call me on 07709 142965. THE QUEEN’S NURSE CONFERENCE IS BEING HELD AT THE RCGP IN LONDON In Nursing Standard’s noticeboard section it said that the Queen’s Nursing Institute’s (QNI) annual conference, which takes place in London on September, 28 would be held at the Royal College of Physicians (careers June 17). This is incorrect. The venue is in fact the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) in Euston Square. This is the first time the QNI has held its conference at the RCGP, and we look forward to welcoming all nurses on the day, particularly those who work in the community and primary care. Advance booking is essential. More information, including the conference programme, speakers, and booking details, can be found at www.qni.org.uk Matthew Bradby, communications manager, Queen’s Nursing Institute
