Mycobacterium bovis infection in cats and people INTERDISCIPLINARY collaboration is the key to the concept of ‘One Health’ (Gibbs 2014) and communication is clearly an important element of such collaboration. A news item in last week’s Veterinary Record (April 5, 2014, vol 174, p 337) refers to a short communication by Roberts and others (2014) describing a cluster of bovine TB cases in cats and it also summarises a Health Protection Report (Public Health England 2014) describing the public health 384 | Veterinary Record | April 12, 2014

investigation into the human contacts of these cats. When these two reports were published, there was considerable press interest in the first reported cat-to-human transmissions of Mycobacterium bovis and I believe that veterinary practitioners would have benefited from being able to refer to both original reports together in one publication, ie, Veterinary Record. They would then have been in a much better position to advise their clients on these events and on the animal and public health risks. This would have been a good opportunity to put ‘One Health’ into action. Rick Sless, Easter Gauldwell, Craigellachie, Aberlour, Moray AB38 9QX e-mail: [email protected]
