Thus, the situation with rubella vaccine seems to parallel that of measles-namely, children vaccinated when less than 15 months of age have a significantly higher rate of vaccine failure. The probable explanation is that transferred maternal antibody persists in some children for up to 15 months after birth and interferes with the child’s own primary immune response. This problem can be obviated by postponing measles and rubella vaccinations until age 15 months.
