New qualification for OVs involved in Cymorth TB in Wales A NEW qualification has been launched to prepare Official Veterinarians (OVs) to deliver the Cymorth TB initiative in Wales. The Cymorth TB initiative provides advice, support and bespoke veterinary interventions for all Welsh cattle keepers, as part of efforts to eradicate bovine TB from Wales. The new OCQ(V) qualification has been launched by Improve International, which handles OV training in Great Britain. Improve International says that the new qualification aims to equip OVs with the skills needed to provide support and advice to farmers whose cattle have bovine TB or whose neighbour’s cattle have bovine TB, so that the impact of the disease can be minimised, breakdowns can be cleared up more quickly and the disease prevented from spreading, or so Officially TB-Free status can be maintained. The qualification is open to all vets, but the company expects it will be taken mainly

by Welsh veterinary surgeons already appointed as OVs to undertake TB testing of cattle and other species. Revalidation will be required every two years. Christianne Glossop, the Chief Veterinary Officer for Wales, explained that the new qualification had been funded by the Welsh Government, which was offering a number of subsidised places to vets. ‘More information will be made available through the Veterinary Delivery Partners,’ she said, adding: ‘Cymorth TB is a key component of our TB eradication programme.’ Sue Hay, head of practical skills training at Improve International, said: ‘In order to carry out Cymorth TB-related work for the Welsh Government, vets must hold this qualification though the knowledge gained will also be useful in related areas. They must also hold the existing OCQ(V) Essential Skills foundation module applicable to all OVs and the OCQ(V) in

tuberculin testing. The new qualification enables vets to build on their knowledge, giving them the information and training they require to deliver a high-quality, herd health-focused, disease-management farm visit to affected farmers as part of the Cymorth programme.’ One of the first Welsh vets to qualify for the OCQ(V), Ifan Lloyd, a senior partner at the St James Vet Group in Swansea, commented: ‘Holders of the OCQ(V) Cymorth TB are focused on providing primary healthcare for the herd. The enhanced support programme builds on the existing working relationship between veterinary practices and their farmer clients; their understanding of the health of the herd and their knowledge of the local disease situation.’ doi: 10.1136/vr.h4747 September 12, 2015 | Veterinary Record | 245
