Nomenclature Clarification for the Bovine Placental Prolactin-Related Hormones LINDA A. SCHULER, MARK A. KESSLER, MINORU TANAKA, AND KUNIO NAKASHIMA Department of Comparative Biosciences (L.A.S., M.A.K.), University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin 53706; and Department of Biochemistry (M.T., K.N.), Mie University School of Medicine, Edobashi 2-174, Tsu, Mie 514, Japan

The bovine placenta expresses multiple genes related to the pituitary hormone, PRL. Bovine placental lactogen (bPL) was originally identified and isolated by virtue of its ability to bind to rabbit PRL receptors (1-3). Subsequent amino acid sequence analysis, and molecular cloning of the cDNA revealed two proteins, identical except for their amino terminus (4, 5). Another distinct

subfamily of placental transcripts predicting secreted glycoproteins similar in structure to bPL and PRL, but quite different in amino acid sequence, has been identified using low stringency hybridization (5-9). At least one of these is also expressed (10). The function of these related placental hormones during pregnancy is not known; however, by analogy to PRL and GH, they may be involved in a variety of processes in mother and fetus. Here we present a common nomenclature for these hormones: New name bPL-Ala bPL-Val bPRP-I bPRP-II bPRP-III bPRP-IV bPRP-V bPRP-VI
