and ended with an AG dinucleotide. This suggests that the deletion can be a result of an adventitious incorrect splicing of phy transcript and a subsequent reverse transcription and integration into the genome. The 392 bp deletion was not an artefact of cloning, since the presence of the 2.7 kbp Hindll fragment which contains this site of deletion was confirmed by genomic Southern hybridization (not shown). The homology between the K3 and K2 sequences was 90%.

The pseudogene for phytochrome (phyP) in Pisum sativum was originally cloned as a 15 kbp BamHI fragment in XEMBL3 (K3). A 4.0 kbp EcoRI-BamHI fragment was subcloned in pBluescript SK+ (pK3EI). The DNA region which hybridized with pA609L, a pea phy cDNA clone (1), was sequenced. The nucleotide sequence of the clone K3 is shown in parallel with that of the clone K2, a genomic phy clone. The pseudogene contained a partial gene sequence homologous to the latter half of the exon 2 of phy, starting from the nucleotide 1222 and extending to the nucleotide 2045. In addition to several substitutions and two small deletions, a striking feature of the K3 sequence was the lack of a 392 bp sequence of K2, which began with a GT dinucleotide I
