We have reported several cDNA clones encoding a and (3 subunits of carp gonadotropin from a pituitary gland cDNA library (1). However, there is a weak positive cDNA clone, pc 1258, whose DNA and deduced amino acid sequences shown below have high degree of homology with the sequences of mitochrondrial cytochrome C oxidase subunit Ill found in many species (2-7). The percentage of homology of DNA and amino acid sequence is 76 and 81.2, respectively, as compared to the human molecule; 75.4 and 81.2 to bovine; 77.4 and 80.0 to mouse; 79.5 and 90.0 to Xenopus; 64.6 and 65.5 to Drosophila; 55.2 and 45 to yeast. The first 29 bp, underlined in the figure, was absent in pc 1258 and these sequences were obtained by a synthetic primer, complementary and reverse to the sequence from bpl30 to bpl55 underlined in the figure, in a subclone of

4.3 kb EcoRI fragment of carp mitochondrial DNA. Determination of the rest of the whole mitochondrial DNA sequence is currently being undertaken.
