Nursing is a global concern I had the privilege last month of speaking at the International Council of Nurses (ICN) conference in Seoul, South Korea, where about 7,000 nurses from 119 different countries explored the importance of global co-operation in nursing. ICN president Judith Shamian paid tribute to the Korean Nurses Association for hosting the conference despite the threat of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome. She warned that outbreaks of such diseases test our ability to respond swiftly and effectively. We must be prepared.

Referring to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, World Health Organization (WHO) director general Margaret Chan said: ‘A person who saves a life is a hero; a person who saves hundreds of lives is a nurse. Yet that person is likely to be overworked, underpaid and under-appreciated.’

announced a global strategy for human resources for health, which should enable closer international working arrangements for nurses. While I was away the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence suspended its work on emergency department staffing levels (page 7), a move that underlines how crucial is the RCN Emergency Care Association’s development of a Baseline Emergency Staffing Tool (pages 14-19). In the UK, as elsewhere in the world, it is essential that we protect citizens and nurses by investing to ensure that all healthcare systems meet expected standards. Nurses need access to the correct equipment, safe numbers of nurses, sound knowledge and competence-based education. ■ Dr Chan’s speech can be accessed at tinyurl.com/nelwwng Tricia Scott is senior lecturer and emergency care research lead at the Centre for Research in Primary and Community Care, University of Hertfordshire
