knowledge. This results in the best possible health outcomes for the patient. It also enables healthcare practitioners to be aware of clinical research trials, so they can ensure patients are fully informed.

Empowering patients

Nursing research A CPD article informed Helen Fowles of an important clinical role and inspired her to make a career change As a registered nurse working in a community setting, I encounter a diverse range of patient healthcare needs every day. Holistic assessment and individualised care plans are essential to meet patients’ needs. Implementing evidence-based nursing practice requires up-todate knowledge and skills. This is achieved by applying research to practice in the form of clinical guidelines, policies and procedures. Guidelines allow nurses to implement safe current practice and are important in advancing nursing care. The CPD article explored the role of a clinical research nurse (CRN) in managing and improving patient care and the contribution nursing research makes to best practice. The role of the CRN is based on the requirements of the research protocol, the clinical needs of the participants and any additional needs that arise from participation in the research. Nurses in this role are involved

in data collection, patient follow up, informed consent and ethical guidance. The CRN acts as an advocate and educator, and provides patients with information relevant to their diagnoses, as well as offering support to patients and their families during a clinical trial. After reading the article, I now understand how CRNs can act as a useful resource for healthcare practitioners. Using their expertise, clinical and specialty skills, CRNs can support healthcare practitioners in daily patient care, and enhance the patient experience through the development of nursing

Effective communication enables patients to take the lead in managing their care and improving their health outcomes. This may also encourage them to participate in clinical research trials. Implementing research findings in practice requires education and management support. It also depends on the practitioner’s interest in and positive attitude towards changing practice. After reflecting on this article, and based on my experience as a community nurse, I have been inspired to pursue a career as a research nurse. I would like to develop my own research proposal on improving end-of-life care in the community for adults with a neurodegenerative condition, exploring the patient experience, and how this influences district nurse perspectives. I have completed the National Institute for Health Research online programme for good clinical practice and will discuss the possibility of undertaking a research-based postgraduate programme with my line manager NS Helen Fowles is a community nurse at Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust, Oxford
