Pediatric Neurology Trainee Publication Award Winner: Dr. Laurie E. Seltzer the first annual Pediatric Neurology Trainee Publication Award. Her article was selected by the journal’s associate editors from the articles submitted in 2013 by North American child neurology and neurosurgery residents and fellows. The award spotlights one of the excellent scholarly contributions by individuals in training and the journal’s publication mentorship program for residents and fellows. Dr. Seltzer’s article “Intraoperative electroencephalography predicts postoperative seizures in infants with congenital heart disease” appeared in the April issue of the journal.1 Seltzer and colleagues from the University of Rochester studied 32 children who underwent surgical repair of congenital cardiac disease with continuous videoelectroencephalographic (EEG) monitoring before, during, and after surgery. The EEG became isoelectric in the 17 infants who required deep hypothermic, circulatory arrest. Two of the 32 infants had electrical seizures during the 48hour EEG assessment period, both of whom required hypothermic circulatory arrest. During isoelectric recovery, both of these infants exhibited a burst pattern characterized by high-amplitude, rhythmic, asynchronous, sharpwave discharges. These discharges did not occur in any of the individuals who did not develop postoperative seizures. We received a number of very good articles from residents and fellows last year. In the view of the associate editors, Dr. Seltzer’s project was novel and well executed, and the resulting article was well written. It is inspiring to see so many of our junior colleagues making excellent contributions, and we plan for this to be an annual award.
