People and places: Dr. Antonio Iacone

Many members of the Editorial Board will know Antonio Iacone who served on the Board retired at the end of January 2012. In 1988 he was Chief of the Immunohaematology Division at the Vasto Hospital, Italy. He spent 10 years as Chief

of the Immunohematology Division, Blood Bank and the Haematology Laboratory at the Pescara Hospital and in 2000 became Director of the Department of Transfusion Medicine. Dr. Iacone is well known for his interest in the areas of transfusion medicine, supportive therapy in the oncohematology, bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cell manipulation and transplantation. He initiated the institution of the Regional Cord Blood Bank. Much of his responsibility was focused on issues such as the development programs in the field of cord blood collection and manipulation, and the oversight of research in antineoplastic adoptive immunotherapy (CIK cells) and regenerative medicine. His knowledge and experience were always beyond par. Dr. Iacone was an active member the “Italian Society of Hemapheresis and Cellular Manipulation” (SIdEM) and consultant on the National Advisory Committee for the Ministry of Health on “Blood Transfusion” and his commitment, advice and professionalism throughout the years were much valued. He published more than 450 articles and presented hundreds of presentations in scientific meetings. During these years Dr. Iacone brought honor by distinguishing himself professionally by giving extraordinary service to the hospital. Farewell, to the man whose word we trusted more than operating procedures, checklists and manuals. Please join us in wishing Dr. Iacone all best for a long and happy retirement.
