The mechanism by which oral oestrogen-containing contraceptives in women and oestrogen treatment of prostatic carcinoma in men increases the risk of vascular disease is unclear. These agents decrease serum concentrations of vitamin BI2,pyridoxal Sphosphate, and folate, all of which are essential for the metabolism of the atherogenic amnio acid homocysteine.
