Preface: ClostPath 2013 meeting on The Molecular Biology and Pathogenesis of the Clostridia special issue The 8th international ClostPath meeting on ‘The Molecular Biology and Pathogenesis of the Clostridia’ was held from Tuesday the 22nd to Friday the 25th of October 2013 in Palm Cove, Queensland in Australia. The meeting attracted 163 participants from 20 countries, bringing together a group of scientists with diverse interests centering on the study of clostridial species. The oral and poster presentations delivered the latest exciting data and discoveries under various themes, including:          

Diseases and epidemiology Genomes, genetics and epidemiology Membrane active toxins Intracellular toxins Regulation of virulence genes Animal diseases Host-pathogen interactions Physiology and biotechnology Laboratory diagnosis Vaccines and immune responses

The opening plenary session entitled ‘Molecular biology of Clostridium difficile toxins’ was delivered by Professor Klaus Aktories from the University of Freiburg, Germany.

This Special Issue of Anaerobe presents papers based on oral and poster presentations at the conference. All papers have been through the normal rigorous peer review process for the journal.
