REVIEW OF SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS 85, 02A101 (2014)

Preface: Proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Ion Sources, Chiba, Japan 2013 Atsushi Kitagawa National Institute of Radiological Sciences, 4-9-1 Anagawa, Inage-ku, Chiba 263-8555, Japan

(Received 8 January 2014; published online 7 February 2014) [http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4862973] The 15th International Conference on Ion Sources, ICIS’13, was held on 9–13 September 2013 in Chiba, Japan. The city is the site of the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS) and of the world’s first Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC). Research on ion sources has a long history. Today it is the core technology for a modern fully flourishing ion beam application industry. Ion sources are now specialized in various applications through a long history of research and development. Each research society develops these specialized ion sources. The International Conference on Ion Sources (ICIS) is the most comprehensive academic conference in the field of ion source research. There is no doubt that every ICIS has encouraged the further advancement of ion sources through fruitful discussions among specialists. At ICIS’13, 271 registered participants from 21 countries and about 20 industrial exhibitors attended the conference. 10 invited talks, 42 oral talks, and 212 posters were presented in the 9 categories shown in the following contents of these proceedings. Included is a memorial talk to Professor Vladimir Zorin who died unexpectedly before the 21st International Workshop on ECR Ion Sources 2014 which he was organizing. The International Advisory Committee (IAC) discussed and laid a course of the conference. IAC allocated time slots for each category and nominated invited speakers. The Scientific Programming Committee (SPC) consists of experts in the various source subfields, at least two persons from each category. SPC judged all abstracts and selected oral speakers. I would like to thank IAC and SPC members for their huge efforts within the too short time. Nine industrial companies presented their related activities in the Industrial Exhibition or in the brochure. Some companies also presented papers. I would like to thank them for their interests. It is no doubt that the relation between academic research and industrial activity must be continuously maintained. I would like to express my deep appreciation to a conference sponsor, Chiba Convention Bureau and International

Center for their financial support. They also dispatched nine citizen volunteers as guides to the city. I would like to express my deep appreciation to Julien Bergoz from Bergoz Instrumentation for sponsoring the Brightness Award prize. The well-organized selection of the award was again led by Dr. Jose Alonso. Through a very closed competition voted by IAC members, Dr. Yuri Kudryavtsev was selected as the winner of 2013. His work “Laser Ionization Spectroscopy” was presented at the ceremony. The conference proceedings are published as an issue of Review of Scientific Instruments as the previous ICISs. I would like to express my special thanks to the Associate Editors, Dr. Richard Pardo and Dr. Ian Brown for their tremendous efforts. The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) managed everything following the policy of IAC. Osaka University and Toyo University teams, Professor Yushi Kato, Professor Takashi Uchida, and 9 student volunteers, smoothly managed the oral and poster sessions with the cooperation of the venue facility, Makuhari Messe. Dr. Yoshihide Higurashi and RIKEN staff safely operated the excursion. I would like to express my special thanks to Professor Masayuki Sekiguchi for the communication with SPC and Dr. Arne Drentje for fruitful suggestions from his long experience. Finally, but not least, support from NIRS was absolutely essential to the conference. NIRS dispatched about 20 staff to the LOC and to serve as secretaries. NIRS also covered the visit of laboratories including HIMAC and the Research, Development and Support Center. The conference website, http://www.nirs.go.jp/conf/icis13/, will be kept after the conference and will be maintained by NIRS. Again, I would like to thank all members of LOC, secretaries, and their families. At the end of this preface, I would like to announce that the IAC selected Brookhaven National Laboratory and New York as the next ICIS host and the venue. The chair of ICIS’15 is Dr. James Alessi. I hope old participants and new comers join with him in 2015 and fill history with their cooperation.
