Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is one of the representative cancers refractory to any therapeutic approach. The incidence of CCA is highest in the northeastern part of Thailand, where chronic inflammation caused by liver fluke (Opisthorchis viverrini) infection is a major etiologic factor. The incidence of CCA is also increasing in other countries, including Japan. Recently, the occurrence of CCA triggered by chemical agents among offset color proof-printing workers has been reported in Osaka, Japan, indicating that CCA is a serious problem not only in clinical situations but also from the view point of public health. Japanese scientists have been involved in the study on CCA in the northeastern part of Thailand in collaboration with the scientists in Thailand since the early 1980s through financial support of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology (MEXT) and the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. One of the authors (YM) served as a principal investigator of the international collaboration program from 2010 to 2013, entitled “Study on control of cholangiocarcinoma associated with liver fluke infection”, which was supported by MEXT and Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). On the basis of this active collaboration, the authors organized an international symposium on CCA, entitled “Cholangiocarcinoma Tokyo 2013”, 8–9 February 2013 at the Institute of Medical Science, The University of Tokyo, Japan (Fig. 1). This is the first international symposium in the world focusing on

CCA, which is supported by MEXT, JST and Nakayama Cancer Research Institute, Japan. A total of 33 distinguished scientists from USA, EU, Thailand and Japan were invited to the symposium and presented the current topics of CCA in epidemiology, parasitology, molecular biology, genomics, biochemistry, pathology, imaging and surgical treatment and more than 120 scientists from eight countries, including young scientists from Asian and African countries, participated in active discussion in the symposium. Thanks to Professor Tadahiro Takada, Editor-inChief of the Journal of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Sciences, the authors were given a great opportunity to serve as Guest Editors of a series of review articles as Topics in this journal. Based on the reports in the international symposium on CCA, a total of 17 articles were invited and published in this and the following three issues of this Journal. The titles of the Topics in each issue are as follows: (1) Etiology and epidemiology of cholangiocarcinoma; (2) Biochemical and molecular pathological aspects of cholangiocarcinoma; (3) New trends on pathology of cholangiocarcinoma; (4) Surgical management of perihilar cholangiocarcinoma. The Guest Editors sincerely hope that these review articles provide useful information to help understand the current status and the whole view of the research on CCA from basic to clinical fields.
