Anaphylaxis in response to the administration of a travel vaccine is fortunately a very rare occurrence. It is vitally important however, that all healthcare professionals involved in immunisation procedures are fully trained in such emergency care including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). In the United Kingdom this is a training requirement on an annual basis. Those working in a hospital environment may get practical experience of such emergencies more often (in any branch of medicine) than those working in a general practice or private travel clinic. Some consider an annual update to be insufficient in such circumstances, due to lack of practice. The Resuscitation Council (UK) facilitates education of both lay and healthcare professional members of the population in the most effective methods of resuscitation appropriate to their needs. In 2013 they combined forces with an award winning production company, UNIT9, to develop a live action movie which has become a revolutionary way to learn CPR for the general public (and refresh your skills!). Lifesaver is a live-action movie you play like a game but is developed in a sophisticated e learning programme. It throws the ‘player’ into the heart of the action in a real time situation of cardiac arrest, even scoring ones’ performance on chest compressions and illustrating the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) and the third scenario manages choking. The programme is available to use on the computer, iPhone, iPad or android phone or tablet. The film features actress Daisy Ridley (one of the lead characters in the forthcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens)

CPR is a valuable skill for any traveller to acquire. Those going on more adventurous trips in particular, would also be well advised to undertake a course in first aid pre departure. Such education is available in face to face learning, or online for example at http://www.redcross.org.uk/Whatwe-do/First-aid/Everyday-First-Aid The British Red Cross have also developed two apps which can act as a useful reminder of skills learned; Red Cross first aid app and the Baby and child first aid app. Both which are free of charge are well presented and illustrated, in some cases with videos or animation, and ‘test yourself’ activities act as valuable reinforcement. In addition to the first aid instruction, further learning opportunities are provided through the topics covered, for example, bleeding heavily, broken bone, burns, choking, hypothermia, strains and sprains and
