Presentation of the 2014 Morris F. Collen award to Charles Safran, MD

We are honored to report that the American College of Medical Informatics presented our co-editor in chief Charles Safran, MD, FACMI, with the 2014 Morris F. Collen award on November 16 in Washington, D.C. during AMIA’s Annual Symposium. The Morris F. Collen award is regarded to be the most prestigious award in health and biomedical informatics. As stated by AMIA, the award recognizes “individuals whose personal commitment and dedication to biomedical informatics has made a lasting impression on healthcare and biomedicine”. Charles Safran has devoted his career to the advancement of health informatics. He is Chief of the Division of Clinical Computing, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School. He is a senior scientist at the National Center for Public Health Informatics at Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Safran is the immediate past President and Chairman of AMIA, and previously served as Vice-President of the International Medical Informatics Association. He is an elected fellow of both the American College of Medical Informatics and the American College of Physicians. Dr. Safran is also on the council of the Health on the Net (HON) Foundation. The Morris Collen award is named after Morris F. Collen, an enthusiastic pioneer who not only profoundly influenced the field of health informatics since its inception, but also created and shaped new models for healthcare delivery, payment and prevention. Morris F. Collen, who passed away recently, lived

to be almost 101 years and most of his life was dedicated to healthcare. His legacy will nurture us in the years to come. AMIA (American Medical Informatics Association) is the professional home of more than 4000 health care professionals, informatics researchers, and thought-leaders in biomedicine, health care and science who drive innovation that is defining future approaches to information and knowledge management in biomedical research, clinical care and public health.
