A little something on extracellular matrix Extracellular matrix (ECM) is a collection of proteins, glycoproteins, proteoglycans, and polysaccharides with different physical and biochemical properties.1 It provides a structural framework that is essential for tissue growth, remodeling and maintenance, stabilizes tissue structures and provides needed elasticity. It also allows important communication between the environment and cells.2 ECM regulates many aspects of cell behavior, including cell proliferation and growth, survival, change in cell shape, migration, and differentiation.3
