"Psychosomatic surgery" J am a retired plastic surgeon. Esthetic surgery represented an important proportion of my practice, although about 80% was reconstructive surgery. With reference to the article "GST on cosmetic procedures will drive patients away, surgeons say" (Can Med Assoc J 1990; 142: 5556), by Patrick Sullivan, the term "cosmetic" as referring to esthetic surgery has always been banned because of its commercial connotation. I have invented the appellation "psychosomatic surgery" to designate esthetic surgery and clearly indicate the psychologic problems inherent in every case. With this true understanding of esthetic surgery, each case is equal to any other one. Since the goods and services tax would apply to esthetic surgery, why not medicare also? Canada's forgotten medical school

[correction]

r. Douglas Waugh's article (Can Med Assoc J 1989; 141: 1170) incorrectly implies that Reddy Memorial Hospital, Montreal, was affiliated with the medical school of Bishop's University, Lennoxville, PQ. Bishop's medical faculty came to rely for teaching on Woman's Hospital, Montreal, which in 1882 was amalgamated with Western Hospital; the former hospital had several changes of address and name both before and after Bishop's medical faculty merged (in 1905) with McGill's and stopped teaching there, and in 1951 it became Reddy Memorial Hospital. -Ed.
