Publishing supplement of a Journal *A Kapil

For the first time in the history of Indian Journal of Medical Microbiology, we are bringing out a supplement issue What is the purpose of a supplement in journals—it can be a sponsored issue or based on invited articles on a related subject ora conference proceedings. However, it has been the experience in the scientific publishing world that such issues are either not cited or not recognized by scientific expert as they do not undergo a strict peer review. Bringing out supplements has been discussed in the annual meetings of Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists too! So should we have supplements or not? The commercially sponsored supplements are anyway not acceptable due to obvious reasons. *Corresponding author (email: ) Department of Microbiology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India Received: 27-01-2015 Accepted: 27-01-2015 Access this article online Quick Response Code:

To have the same theme articles put together as supplement is editors’ nightmare as it affects the processing policy of journals, because the publication time of the article may not be based on the date of acceptance, but rather on the subject. This also may be unfair to the contributors and may not interest all microbiologists alike. The last option of the conference proceedings are of limited purpose as they are not read by anyone, anyway. Well so what is this supplement about! Some of the contributing authors of this issue called me as they were a little anxious to know if this issue will be indexed or not. Well for sure, this Indian Journal of Medical Microbiology supplement (February 2015) will be indexed and it has all peer reviewed articles as has been done all along. The reason for this supplement was a large number of manuscripts being submitted and processed by Indian Journal of Medical Microbiology. The volumes published are only four in a year and to ensure a high turnaround time for the accepted articles; a supplement had to be published. Therefore, in terms of scientific content it is not different from any other issue. Enjoy an extra scientific feast this year!
