Questionnaire will help to shape regulator’s revalidation system By Kat Keogh Nurses are being urged to have their say on how they will prove they remain fit to practise. The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) last week launched its consultation on plans for a new revalidation system, which will replace post-registration education and practice (PREP) next year. Under the new model, everyone in the UK’s 670,000-strong nursing workforce will be required to complete revalidation every three years. As well as completing the required hours of practice and continuous professional development (CPD), nurses will have to show they comply with the NMC code of conduct by submitting third party feedback from patients and work appraisals. An online questionnaire is open until March 31, where the NMC is seeking views on matters including how nurses collect feedback at the moment, and how often they have appraisals (see panel).

Patient feedback

Lincolnshire Community Health Service NHS Trust district nurse Candice Pellett said linking revalidation to patient feedback is a good thing – even if this included negative comments. ‘As nurses, we have to reflect, and a good way is getting feedback from patients and families,’ she said. ‘We cannot concentrate just on what we want to hear, but on what we can learn from.’ Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust education co-ordinator Fiona Longstaff said gathering feedback could be problematic for nurses who, like her, are on the register but work in a non-clinical area. She said: ‘There

Questions the NMC is asking nurses Third party confirmation/appraisals: Do you currently have an annual appraisal? Should the NMC link revalidation to an existing employer process? Is an appraisal the best way to get third party confirmation of a nurse’s fitness to practise? Feedback: How do you currently receive feedback? Appraisal. Email. Formal meeting. Telephone call. Verbal. Do not receive feedback. Who should be able to give feedback on your performance? Patients and service users. Families and carers. Fellow nurses. Other colleagues. Nursing students – in the case of lecturers. How much feedback does a nurse need? (options range from one to more than 20 pieces of feedback) would have to be tight guidelines on who to approach.’ Mark Boothroyd, a staff nurse at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in London, said the amount of time nurses are given by employers to develop their skills should be taken into account. He said: ‘I am fortunate to work for a trust where we have study days and continuing education, but I wonder if in this time of austerity and budget cuts across the NHS, nurses elsewhere are given the same opportunities.’

Is showing you have learned from feedback more important than whether that feedback is positive or negative? Continuous professional development (CPD): How do you think CPD should be measured? Certificates. Credits. Hours. Reflections. Other. How many hours of CPD should nurses complete every three years (currently 35 hours)? Auditing revalidation: How should nurses submit revalidation evidence if they are selected to be audited? Online. Their own documentation. Using a template provided by the NMC. Other. Appraisals could play a crucial part in the new model, despite fears that revalidation could be difficult for nurses where employers fail to conduct regular or effective appraisals. NMC director of continued practice Katerina Kolyva told Nursing Standard that nurses would be able to raise concerns about a lack of employer appraisals with the regulator. Nurses are also being asked in the questionnaire to give their views on the NMC code, which is due to be published in December.
