Registrants given extra time to prepare portfolios for revalidation Nurses and midwives will be given at least six months to prepare for the introduction of revalidation under a new timetable agreed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council last week. Detailed guidance setting out the NMC’s requirements will be issued in October – three months earlier than previously planned – to give registrants time to develop portfolios containing evidence of compliance. The first registrants affected will be those who re-register in April 2016, who will have until April 1 to submit their revalidation application. The NMC is yet to decide how many applications will be checked in detail. In the meantime, management consultants KPMG are conducting assessments on whether employers across the UK are ready to play their part in the process and the likely costs involved. The information from the assessments and the revalidation pilots will be considered by council members at their July meeting.

patients, colleagues and others. The NMC would prefer the confirmation process to be part of staff appraisals, but is concerned that large numbers of employers do not have systems in place. NMC nurse member Carol Shillabeer told a council meeting in London last week she fears there will be ‘a major panic at the last minute’. Concerns about employers’ preparedness are greatest in England, although NMC chief executive Jackie Smith said she has received ‘reasonable assurance’ that the new revalidation timetable can be met and insisted there is no lack of will to stay on track. Ms Smith was due to meet the chief nursing

officers from all four UK countries as Nursing Standard went to press to discuss revalidation and The Code. Chief nursing officer Jane Cummings told Nursing Standard that England’s revalidation programme board is providing ‘robust oversight’ of the implementation process. She added: ‘I am committed to supporting the NMC to ensure that the healthcare system and registrants are prepared for the revalidation model, which will support nurses and protect the public.’ Prepare for revalidation with RCNi’s portfolio and revalidation resources at http://rcni.com/ workplace/revalidation

Testing readiness

The NMC is assessing its own preparedness to audit registrant compliance. It is also monitoring progress among 2,500 registrants in 19 pilot sites, where it plans to study around 5% of portfolios closely. Under revalidation a third party – usually the registrant’s line manager – will be asked to confirm that the nurse or midwife has complied with the requirements of revalidation. These include completing a minimum of 40 hours’ continuing professional development (CPD) and writing at least five reflective accounts that are based on CPD, understanding of the Code, and feedback from
