Renal Medullary Carcinoma Associated with Sickle Cell Trait
Medullary carcinoma affects adolescents and young adults with sickle cell trait or heterozygous sickle cell disease (middle illustration). On US (top left) and CT (bottom left) images, the tumor demonstrates an infiltrative pattern, which expands but preserves the reniform shape. At histologic examination (top right), the tumor is marginated with inflammatory cells. Medullary carcinoma forms a large mass centered in the renal medulla, with satellite nodules in the adjacent renal cortex (bottom right). Extensive metastatic disease to the nodes, bone, and lung is typical, and the prognosis is poor.
