Report 2013: Tumors of the pineal region

Foreword Avant-propos

The tumours of the pineal gland represent a well known topic in the neurosurgical literature but their management is not yet well established and still a matter of controversy. We decided to focus on the field of pineal tumours, thus we have chosen to eliminate from this review other different subtypes of tumours that belong to the pineal region but that are not tumours of the gland. The topic of pineal parenchymal tumours represents an important challenge because the strategies of treatment are radically different according to the histological subtypes and each case necessitates a pluridisciplinar discussion to improve the chance of patient’s cure, to decrease the rate of complications related to surgery, chemotherapy or irradiation either in paediatric patients or in adults. To define the “state of art” concerning tumours of pineal gland and the therapeutical strategies is one of the important aim of this report and one of our ambition is to permit to all the readers to have clear ideas about the guidelines concerning this topic. Since long time pineal gland tumours have represented a topic of special interest and a field of excellence of all the Neurosurgical School of Lyon and of my Great Teacher Prof. Claude Lapras, unforgettable, that carried an important contribution for developing this topic to familiarise all the European and World Neurosurgical Community with these tumours. Studying on this topic signifies to pay a tribute to him again and also the opportunity to testify him the great value of his ideas

already acknowledged by all the International Neurosurgical Community. It is also a great honour for me to accomplish this work that I tried to realize with a lot of humility but also with a lot of passion and energy with the hope that it could become a reference for all the specialists dealing with pineal tumour in order to shade light on the best choice for the therapeutical strategies. I want also to thank all the participants who have contributed with their knowledge to the realization of this issue. I am grateful to the French Speaking Neurosurgical Society and his past President, Pr. Marc Sindou, who gave me the great honour to accomplish this scientific task, the past President Pr. Francois Xavier Roux who supported me with enthusiasm and to the current President Pr. C. Raftopulos who friendly encouraged me in the last months. Finally, I wish to everyone a good lecture. C.
