the scandalous situation we currently find ourselves in at present. Moreover, I submit that without a national health system to provide medical care to everyone regardless of their personal financial situation, we are unlikely to get sufficient support to tackle the difficult problems which will allow us to prevent disease. Indeed, curative medicine has held sway in our culture since early Greece and it is not likely that we can undo thousands of years of culture easily. Finally, I do not wish to convey a message of hopelessness for I believe that through our efforts and further research greater advances lie ahead. Progress however, does not lie in the

direction of higher unemployment and taxation of those who work for a living. Stephen Redmond, MD, MPH 12 South Randolph Ave. Poughkeepsie, NY 12601

Results on Bread Testing Consumer Reports (CR) has published interesting and puzzling findings that some white breads may be superior to whole wheat and other specialty breads (May 1976). We have partially repeated and extended these rat-feeding studies, and reprints of our report

are available (D. R. Davis, E. Malone, and R. J. Williams, J. Int. Acad. Preventive Med. 4:41, 1977). For the six breads we tested we confirm CR's rankings, but contrary to its conclusions, we find the six rankings correlate strongly with the amounts of milk products, egg, and possibly soy used as ingredients. Interestingly, the bottomranked sprouted wheat bread, though markedly inferior to all the others, was improved by supplementation with vitamins, but not with protein. DonaldcR. Davis, PhD
