Robert W. Gibson, MD 1925–2014 Dr. Robert W. Gibson, who was a member of Psychiatry’s Editorial Advisory Board, died on March 8, 2014 at his home in Parkton, Maryland, at the age of 89. For more than 30 years Dr. Gibson was a seminal figure at the Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital where he oversaw many changes. In an article that appeared in the Baltimore Sun in 1991 Dr. Gibson was called, “The Man Who Shook Up Sheppard Pratt.” Dr. Gibson graduated from the Navy’s V-12 college training program at Swarthmore College. He attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and earned his medical degree in 1948. Dr. Gibson completed his residency in Psychiatry at Bethesda Naval Hospital in 1952 and graduated from the Washington Psychoanalytical Institute in 1960 as a training psychoanalyst. Dr. Gibson was a staff psychiatrist at Chestnut Lodge in Rockville, Maryland, from 1952 to 1960. In 1960 he became the clinical director of Sheppard Pratt, where his influence was quickly felt. Dr. Gibson was active in many professional organizations and served as President of the American Psychiatric Association, the National Association for Private Psychiatric Hospitals, and the Central Neuropsychiatric Hospital Association. After his retirement in 1991, he served as a volunteer at Sheppard Pratt. He is survived by his wife, Diane, two sons, a daughter, four stepchildren, and 14 grandchildren.
