INTRODUCTION

A survey of a Belgian population suffering from thyrotoxicosis was performed. The clinical and epidemiological aspects were reported in a previous communication (4). This paper will try to assess the value of routine biochemical parameters and functional tests of the thyroid gland. The more specific parameters such as protein bound iodine and hormone determinations were reviewed in another paper (5). Our aim was to determine whether routine biochemical parameters showed a significant difference between hyperthyroid and nonhyperthyroid patients. A group of thyrotoxic patients, consisting of 130 cases of Graves disease and 30 cases of toxic adenoma, was compared with a group of 36 patients suffering from so called "Non-hyperthyroid" disease (4).

calcium, phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase were measured by automated methods in the routine laboratory of our department (Dir. Prof. Dr. R.J . Wieme). The basal metabolic rate (B.M .R.) was measured by a Sanborn respiratory apparatus using a normogram provided by the same company, to assess, the percentage above or below normal. Achilles reflex time was assessed by a photomotograph connected to an electrocardiographic apparatus . Protein bound iodine was measured by a technicon auto-analyzer method. The T 3 test was performed using the Hamolsky technique (8) in the department of radiotherapeutics (Dir. Prof. Dr. P.M. Van Vaerenbergh). Statistical analysis was carried out using the chi-square test using a Yates correction whenever appropriate. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

METHODS

A) Routine biochemical parameters

Prior to any therapy, several biochemical and metabolic parameters were measured in each patient. Serum glutaminic oxalacetic transaminase (S.G.O.T.), serum glutaminic pyruvic transaminase (S.G.P.T.), serum creatinine, cholesterol,

As can be seen in table I no difference in occurrence of increased values could be observed in S.G.O.T. The S.G.P.T. was however puzzling; a difference being observed between nonhyperthyroid and hyperthyroid patients. The possibility of the disturbed hepatocellular function in Graves Disease is well documented (l, 3, 16, 18). The etiology of this phenomenon is however still unclear. Some authors favour an intrinsic · hepatocellular dysfunction whereas others claim a circulatory disturbance in the liv-
