Sarah gives us much to admire and celebrate All the finalists in this year’s Nursing Standard Nurse Awards had inspiring stories to tell, but one stood out even in such illustrious company. Sarah Lewis’s work relieving pain among severely injured service personnel has made such a dramatic difference to so many lives that she deservedly walked away with the title RCN Nurse of the Year 2014. LIKE MOST NURSES, SARAH LEWIS PLAYS DOWN THE IMPORTANCE OF HER WORK

As you can read in this week’s issue of Nursing Standard, Ms Lewis plays down the importance of her work, as most nurses are prone to do. Sarah is a pain management nurse at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre at Headley Court in Surrey. She pays tribute to the team around her, likening her role to that of chocolate in a marble cake, bringing all the ingredients together. What Sarah has achieved goes much further than that. Those of us lucky enough to be at the awards ceremony at The Savoy in London last Friday were shown a film in which some of the young military personnel she has helped spoke eloquently about the impact she has had. Most of all, she has worked with her patients to manage their care so that the mind-numbing effects of their medication are minimised. Subscribers to Nursing Standard’s digital edition can watch the film on their page-turner edition. Sarah’s colleagues were equally effusive in their praise. She was nominated for the defence nursing category in the awards by her line manager, while the nurses and healthcare assistants in her team were clearly delighted at their teammate’s success.
