EDITORIAL

Scholarly elves? Producing an issue of a scientific journal is not the work of just one or two people; it requires the effort of a team of scholars who are supported by many others. Many readers may never interact with the scholars who write for them or the people who make the journalistic wheels turn. Sometimes readers are not fully aware of how research studies, scientific manuscripts and journals come to exist in print or digital form. There is an old fairy tale from the Brothers Grimm about the honest shoemaker who could not make a decent living and went to bed hungry at night. He wished for better but could not seem to get ahead. One evening he had cut out the last bit of leather he owned but went to bed exhausted before going any further. The next morning he awoke to find an excellent pair of shoes on his worktable that sold for a high price. As the story goes, some elves (magical little people) had taken pity on the man and had come during the night to do his work for him. This when on in secret for a long time and he became the most famous and prosperous shoemaker in the land. The End.

As an Editor, teacher and coach, I always take care to remind my friends and colleagues that there are no elves to do the work of nurses or scholars. My favorite maxim (about lots of things) is: If this (writing, statistics, playing a musical instrument, etc.) were easy, then everyone could do it. Not meaning to discourage anyone, it is just so important to remember that practice, persistence and hard work is needed to excel in any task. To produce a single issue of a journal, the work of scholarship becomes the effort of many hands. In this issue, we take exception to the fairy tale of the shoemaker by recognizing and thanking the members of the 2015 editorial team (see photo) and the manuscript reviewers. These are the scholars who have envisioned and fashioned the issue you are reading today. The manuscript reviewers for this issue are: Dr. Akiko Sakajo, Dr. Chiang Chung-Lim Vico, Dr. Cynthia D. Connelly, Dr. Jui-Ying Feng, Dr. Mary Jo Clark, Dr. Ching-Min Chen, Dr. Miho Iwakuma, Dr. Miki Marutanii, Dr. Misako Miyazaki, Dr. Naohiro Hohashi, Dr. Rozzano Locsin, Dr. Tomoko Majima, Dr. Toyoko Yoshizawa, Dr. Yeoun Soo Kim-Godwin, and Dr. Yuji Tanaka.

Left to right: The 2015 Editorial Team—Dr. Ariko Noji, Dr. Yuki Mochizuki, Dr. Mary Umlauf, Dr. Harue Masaki, and Dr. Shu Chun Chien.

Best wishes from the Journal of Nursing and Human Sciences, Mary Grace Umlauf, RN, PhD doi:10.1111/ijn.12390
