SELF-RETAINED INTERNAL URETERAL STENTS

To the Editor. The article by Hepperlen and associates was well done and they have a large series of cases to point out the usefulness of the new Cook catheter stent. 1 I have had experience with only 2 cases and would agree with their enthusiasm in the usefulness of this catheter. I would like to suggest to them and to your readers that the No. 6 whistle-tipped catheter, which is included in the set, may not have to be used at all. In my 2 cases passing any catheter was impossible, whereas the wire 3 French guide went up through the markedly obstructed ureters with ease. The stent was then directly put over

the guide wire and had to be shoved with notable force through the carcinomatous strictures. Theoretically, an attempt to pass a whistle-tipped catheter before the guide wire might only result in a false passage, which would make the eventual passage of the guide impossible. Respectfully, Robert W. Geist St. Paul Urology, P.A. St. Paul, Minnesota 55102 1. Hepperlen, T. W., Mardis, H. K. and Kammandel, H.: Self-retained internal ureteral stents: a new approach. J.
