A groupof 480 patients,aged 19-78 with an HRSDscoreof at least 17 andwho met DSM Ill criteriafor majordepressivedisorderwere studied. Patientswere givenplacebofor a one week single-blindrun-inperiod,after which sertralinewas administeredfor eight weeks. This was followed by 44 weeks in which patientsreceivedsertralineor placeboon a double-blind, randomised basis.
