A groupof 480 patients,aged 19-78 with an HRSDscoreof at least 17 andwho met DSM Ill criteriafor majordepressivedisorderwere studied. Patientswere givenplacebofor a one week single-blindrun-inperiod,after which sertralinewas administeredfor eight weeks. This was followed by 44 weeks in which patientsreceivedsertralineor placeboon a double-blind, randomised basis. Patients were assessedperiodically using the 17-item HRSDand the Clinical GlobalImpressionscales.Duringthe entiredouble-blindperiod24(13.0%) sertralinepatients relapsedcomparedwith 48 (45.7%) placebopatients (!‘10) —¿ does not substantiate this view (Table 3) as the
