Preface

Visualisation of biological phenomena has been playing a crucial role in the advances of biomedical sciences. Until the first observations of living animalcules by Anton van Leeuwenhoek, with the aid of a handcrafted microscope at the end of the 17th century, microorganisms were utterly ignored by natural scientists. This seminal discovery paved the establishment of causal links between microbes and diseases, formally made by Louis Pasteur in the 19th century. Recent advances in molecular biology and imaging technologies have now provided us with an unprecedented opportunity to visualise and analyse previously hidden interactions between parasites and their hosts in vivo. This special issue covers some of the latest discoveries and perspectives derived from the use of qualitative and quantitative intravital imaging to improve our understanding on host–parasite interactions and to develop better diagnostic methods or treatment of parasitic diseases. This issue presents in vivo imaging of unicellular and pluricellular, ectoand endo-parasites, as well as novel methods to image superficial and deep organs that are common targets of parasitic infections, such as
