CHIRALITY 26:429 (2014)

Editors' Note Special Issue of Chirality : 14th International Conference on Chiroptical Spectroscopy (CD2013) A conference on Chiroptical spectroscopy is held every other year, with the conference location circulating around the world. The 14th International Conference on Chiroptical Spectroscopy, held at the Student Life Center of Vanderbilt University from June 9–13 (Sun–Thur), 2013, with ~150 participants, represents by far the largest gathering held in the USA (previous conferences in this series held in the USA were in Pingree Park, CO (1993) and Pensacola, FL (2005)). The 14th International Conference on Chiroptical Spectroscopy featured 5 plenary lectures, 19 invited lectures, 40 contributed lecture presentations, and 64 poster presentations, from around the world. Participants from 20 different countries (Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and USA) were represented at the conference. The scientific program included contributions in all branches of Chiroptical Spectroscopy. Besides interesting scientific discussions, the participants were able to experience relaxing social events. The opening reception on Sunday, “Taste of Tennessee,” featuring from spicy shrimp cups to Lynchburg Lemonade, was a unique experience for the overseas participants. The reception appeared headed for all night long, but had to be stopped by the restriction imposed by the nightly building closing time. Monday evening featured a dinner cruise on the General Jackson Showboat. In addition to the majestic boat, the atmosphere inside the boat was a true American experience for overseas participants. The musical entertainment, “Heart of Tennessee—A Musical Journey,” featured country music songs from East, West, and Middle Tennessee with actionpacked performances by General Jackson talented singers. The reaction from conference participants was nothing short of amazing. Tuesday evening featured a picnic dinner in majestic Buttrick Hall Atrium, followed by a trip to the Opryland Hotel. The gigantic indoor atriums and dancing water light show at the Opryland Hotel were a relaxing treat

after a long day of scientific presentations. The conference dinner was held on Wednesday evening at the University Club of Nashville, with varying performances: String Quartet, Barbershop Quartet by Dark Horse, and Magic show by Professor Koji Nakanishi (Columbia University). An after dinner historical lecture by Professor Joseph Parello, Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur (Knight of the Legion of Honor, 2013) and poster award presentations capped the evening. After half-day scientific presentations on Thursday, the participants left for their respective homes in the afternoon. This special issue of Chirality includes some of the contributions made at the 14th International Conference on Chiroptical Spectroscopy. A total of 21 papers submitted for this special issue can be classified into the following main areas: Stereochemistry, Structure, and Supramolecules (Abbate et al.; Chruszcz-Lipska et al.; Cid et al.; Han et al.; Nicu et al.; Norman et al.; Pescitelli et al.; Polavarapu et al.; Tibor et al.; Superchi et al.); Biomacromolecular structures (Blanch et al.; Cho et al.; Dzwolack et al.; Nagai et al.; Rodger et al.); Advances in Experimental Methods and instrumentation (Kahr et al.; Lüdeke et al.; Yan et al.; Wang et al.); Advances in Theoretical and Computational Methods (Barone et al.); and Chiral materials (Noguez et al.). It is hoped that the tradition of scientific rigor and relaxing social atmosphere for scientific exchanges, which has become a norm at these meetings, will continue to reach higher levels at the future conferences in this series.
