This issue of Clinics in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery is focused on sports medicine, with a range of topics that have clinical significance but also provide relevant and timely information on topics important to our patients like aging and public health. Today sports medicine is much more than just treating competitive athletes. Due to increasing sports participation, increasing life spans, and growing knowledge about the benefits of an active lifestyle, sports medicine practitioners are treating patients with very diverse activity levels, age ranges, and athletic abilities. Along with this changing athletic population, the subspecialty of podiatric sports medicine continues to evolve as research accumulates, technology improves, and the demand for sports medicine services increase. A sports medicine podiatrist does not function in isolation within their clinic and needs to keep abreast of the latest information. They need to interact with athletes in training rooms, at athletic events, and in conjunction with coaches and other members of the patient’s medical team. Because of this, providers need to be wellversed in the latest philosophies and techniques regarding exam, treatment, and technology. Aging athletes and those seeking to improve their health through athletics will continue to become a bigger segment of the sports medicine patient population, and there are special considerations for these individuals. Sports medicine practitioners can and should not only treat injured athletes but also educate their patients on the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle. The contributing authors are all experienced, respected sports medicine practitioners and, not coincidentally, active and athletic individuals themselves. Their collective knowledge and experience were sought out in order to provide the reader with the most comprehensive, up-to-date, and evidence-based information possible.
