ABSTRACT Attempt has been made t o assess q u a n t i t a t i v e l y t h e magnitudes of b o t h t h e gas-phase r e s i s t a n c e and t h e surface r e s i s t a n c e t o t h e evaporatioi o f d r o p l e t s and t o determine t h e t r a n s i t i o n p o i n t a t which the evaporation changes from a d i f f u s i o n - c o n t r o l l e d t o a s u r f a c e - c o n t r o l l e d process. T h i s t r a n s i t i o n p o i n t i s s t r o n g l y dependent upon t h e ambient pressure and t h e d r o p l e t size.

I t i s found t h a t a t atmospheric pressure t h e p a r t i c l e

r a d i u s a t which t h e t r a n s i t i o n takes place i s i n t h e range o f 1 f o r water, 0.1~f o r n - d i b u t y l p h t h a l a t e , 0.1
