Syncephalis indica sp. n. from India S. N. Singh and A. K. Sarbhoy With 2 figures

Thirtyfive species and one variety of the genus Syncephalis have been recognized by BENJAMIN (1966). Out of these, fifteen have so far been recorded from India by various mycologists (MEHROTRA 1959; MEHROTRA and PRASAD 1964, 1965 and 1967). The authors have isolated a species of Syncephalis from Jodhpur soil during their survey of various soil fungi from India. The new isolate is characterized by its subglobose to turbinate vesicle and smaller conidia. On examination, 'it comes near to Syncephalis depressa and S. nodosa, having a branched merosporangia, but it differs in size from the conidiophores, columellae, and conidia. These divergent characters induced the authors to give a new specific name after the place of its country's origin.

Syncephalis indica sp. nov. (Figs. 1 and 2) Coloniae in agaris culturae SMA, PDA at avena ceo albae, in maturitate griseae; hyphae vegetae paucae hyalinae ramosae semper hyperparasiticae; conidiophora erecta solitaria vel caespitosa, rhizoideis pradedita, glabra, 75-292 p,m (plerumque 160-225,um) longa, ad basim 9-12,um ad apicem 4.5-6 p,m diam., in vesiculam subglobosum et turbinatum fertilem (hemisphaerium superiorem) 15-24 X 15-18 p,m diam. terminantia; merosporangia 25-35, elemento quoque ramoso, longe cylindrico, 30-36,um longo, 2.6-3.2,um lato, in conidia 8-10 dirumpente; conidia oblonga et obtusa, glabra tenuitunicata, in massa albida, 5.2-6.5x2.6-3.2,um; zygosporae non visae. In culturis ad Mucorem sp. e solo stercorata, Rajasthan, India isolatum parasiticus. Colonies on SMA, PDA, and Oat-meal agar white, turning at maturity grey; vegetative hyphae few, hyaline branched, always growing as hyperparasite; conidiophores erect, single or in groups, always with a tuft of rhizoids, simple, smooth, 75-292 p,m (mostly 160-225 p,m) in length, at the base 9-12,um in diam., 4.5-6 p,m at the tip, terminating in a subglobose to turbinate vesicle, 15-24XI5-18,um in diam.; merosporangia on the upper hemisphere, 25-35 in number, each merosporangial fundament branched, long, cylindrical, 30-36,um in length, 2.6-3.2,urn in diam., fragmenting into 8 to 10 conidia; conidia oblong to obtuse with truncate ends, smooth, thin-walled, whitish in mass, 5.2-6.5 x2.6-3.2 p,m; zygospores not observed.
