News & Reports mental health

Tackling stigma around mental health ‘Time to Talk’ day took place on February 4, with the aim of getting as many people as possible across England talking about mental health. The day is organised by the Time to Change campaign, which is driven by the charities Mind and Rethink Mental Illness. It aims to tackle stigma and discrimination around mental health, and to change behaviour as well as attitudes to mental health issues. The campaign began in October 2007 and is funded by the Department Postcards produced to support ‘Time to of Health, Comic Relief Talk’ day and the Big Lottery Fund. According to the campaign, mental health problems affect one in four people every year. However, it says, many people are afraid to talk about their experiences because they fear it will affect their jobs or relationships. The charities hope that ‘Time to Talk’ day will help to break the silence and show that ‘talking about this once-taboo issue doesn’t need to be difficult’. One of the initiatives adopted to promote Time to Talk day was the distribution of packs containing coasters and tea bags to commuters, inviting them to ‘pop the kettle on and ask someone how they’re doing today’. Other downloadable resources included postcards, bunting, posters and conversation starters as well as resources for teachers and employers. More information about the Time to Change campaign, together with information about mental health issues and the support available, is available at www.time-to-change.org.uk doi: 10.1136/vr.i809
