The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews – Issue 7 2013

In June 2013, a major innovation was added to The Cochrane Library with the introduction of “publish when ready” for new and updated reviews. Over the last few years, this means that this vital source of knowledge has moved from publication every three months, to monthly and, now, daily. It is also fitting that this greater immediacy coincided with the publication during July 2013 of the 8 000th protocol or full Cochrane Review. During July, more than 80 Cochrane Reviews were updated or published in full for the first time in Issue 7. Among those that were updated, the new research led to changes in the conclusions of 17. These reviews and the whole collection of more than 8 000 Cochrane protocols and reviews are available in full at www.TheCochraneLibrary.com. Each document contains information about the methods used to conduct of the review and, in the full reviews, there are details about each included and excluded study, any metaanalyses conducted by the Cochrane researchers, and their conclusions about the implications for practice and future research. The new and updated reviews cover a wide range of health and social care, helping people to make well-informed decisions and choices across the whole life-span. Updated reviews consider the role of the partogram for women in spontaneous labour at term (1), and the effects of different timing for clamping the umbilical cord in term infants (2). There are also updated reviews with new conclusions on the effects of influenza vaccines for healthcare workers (3), oral morphine for cancer pain (4), and electromechanical-assisted training for walking after stroke (5). Among reviews published in full for the first time in Issue 7 2013 of The Cochrane Library, are those looking at the effects of acetaminophen (or paracetamol) on the common cold in adults (6), intermittent drug techniques for schizophrenia (7), and whether the topical application of tranexamic acid reduces bleeding (8). Other reviews in this collection range from acupuncture for stress urinary incontinence (9), through psychosocial interventions for patients with head and neck cancer (10), to Xuebijing for paraquat poisoning (11). Authors of some of the recently published reviews have prepared short audio podcasts about their research, which are freely available as Evidence Pods on www.cochrane.org/podcasts. Over the following pages, four of these authors describe their work in their own words. You can read about Cochrane Reviews in in asthma (12), cys-

tic fibrosis (13), osteoarthritis (14), and rheumatoid arthritis (15). You can also explore Cochrane Reviews in more depth and in different media in the Cochrane Journal Club (www.CochraneJournalClub.com). You will get free access to the full reviews, slideshows, podcasts, links to additional resources, and suggestions for discussion points about each review. A recent example is the Cochrane Review of nutritional interventions for people with HIV, by a team of researchers in South Africa and the USA (16). 1. Lavender T, Hart A, Smyth RMD.
