The Eastern Cardiothoracic Surgical Society and Innovations Join Forces Evelio Rodriguez, MD

A

s this year’s president of the Eastern Cardiothoracic Surgical Society (ECTSS), I am very excited to announce that Innovations: Technology and Techniques in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery has become the official journal for our Society. This Society has a very rich history. It was founded in 1962 as the Pennsylvania Association for Thoracic Surgery as a venue for cardiothoracic surgeons to gather together and increase their negotiation power with insurance companies to receive proper payment for emerging thoracic procedures. Since then, the Society has been characterized by exemplary collegiality among its members. In addition, the annual meetings have served as the initial forum for many medical students, residents, and cardiothoracic residents to present their first basic science and clinical research endeavors. In 2012, our board approved a motion to change our Society’s name to the ECTSS, and our members later approved this motion during the 50th Annual Meeting. The name change was done to extend our membership to a broader geographical area. Since then, our membership has significantly grown, including new members from New York, Massachusetts, Maryland, and North Carolina, among others. As our Society continues to grow, a next natural step was to establish a formal affiliation with a cardiothoracic journal. We really appreciate that Ralph J. Damiano, Jr, MD, and the Board of Directors of the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery accepted our request. We encourage our members and presenters to the annual meeting to submit their work to Innovations. I invite other readers of Innovations to consider joining our Society and to attend our 52nd Annual Meeting of the ECTSS, October 8 to 11, at the Four Seasons in Palm Beach, FL USA. We look forward to a fruitful and collaborative relationship with Innovations for many years to come.
