The International Conference on Comparative Endocrinology and Physiology The International Conference on Comparative Endocrinology and Physiology (ICCEP-2013) was hosted by Department of Zoology, RTM Nagpur University, Nagpur, Maharashtra, India from 21st to 23rd Oct 2013 the week before DIWALI (the festival of light). The meeting was organized by Prof. Arun G. Jadhao and convened by Prof. Arun M. Khurad and marked the ‘‘Golden Jubilee’’ year celebration of the Department of Zoology, RTM Nagpur University. The meeting did not take place in the University but was located in the surrounding countryside in the magnificent Surabardi Meadows Estate. ICCEP-2013 was sponsored by the Indian Society of Comparative Endocrinology (ISCE, President, Prof. C.M. Chaturvedi of Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi) and International Association of Stress Physiologists (IASP, Secretary, Prof. Subash Peter, University of Kerala) and was attended by many society members and was an active and lively meeting. Among the 280 participants that attended the meeting, more than 150 were young scholars. The conference was all encompassing as it covered a broad range of subjects that were organized into technical sessions that started with invited talks and then shorter oral presentations. The two poster sessions that extended right up until the evening cultural events at 19.30 h was attended by many enthusiastic young comparative endocrinologist keen to discuss science and their own work. The scientific program included 10 plenary talks, 20 invited talks, 20 oral and 126 poster presentations in neuroendocrinology,

vertebrate endocrinology, reproductive endocrinology, developmental endocrinology, molecular endocrinology, endocrine diseases and immunology, research applications and management, stress and sensory physiology and invertebrate endocrinology. The sessions were chaired by eminent scholars from India and abroad and talks in several of the sessions gave rise to lively discussion. There was a very strong presence of comparative endocrinologists working on birds and also on fish and amphibians as is evident from the papers that make up this special issue of General and Comparative Endocrinology. It was exciting to be among so many comparative endocrinologists and to see that this area is still very active in India and the high number so young scientists and the quality of their poster presentations holds promise for the future. It was not possible to include all the communications presented at ICCEP-2013 in the special issue but I hope that this small selection of articles will provide some insight into some of the research in comparative endocrinology in India.
