The Journal of School Nursing — SAGE Writing Awards

As the Annual Conference of the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) approaches, it is time to announce The Journal of School Nursing (JOSN) and SAGE Writing Award winners. The two awards recognize publishing development within the school nursing community and also the expertise of scholars who publish in The JOSN. The awards were developed to recognize excellence in writing and to promote publishing in The JOSN. NASN provides free registration to the NASN Annual Conference, at which time recipients will receive a certificate recognizing their achievement. SAGE Publishing provides a US$500 award to each of the winners who are encouraged to use the monetary award for expenses incurred to attend the NASN Annual Conference. The conference will be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from June 24 to 27, 2015, at the Downtown Marriott Hotel. Writing awards offer important recognition of authors and offer readers a more personal glimpse of the authors.

Physical Examination. She holds membership in many professional organizations and is a board member of Three Rivers National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) and serves as a School Nurse Liaison. She has mentored undergraduate nursing students, nurse practitioner students, and nurses getting their school nurse certifications from several local universities. Dr. Allison has a great love for the children and staff she has the privilege of serving. She has a home in Pittsburgh, which she shares with her father and her dogs. She has been a lifelong single and considers her 10 nieces and nephews and four great nieces and great nephews as her own and dearly loves her family! She enjoys dog agility, hiking, and kayaking. She serves as a Deaconess in her church.

The JOSN SAGE First Publication Award by a School Nurse The JOSN SAGE First Publication Award recognizes writing excellence of a first-time school nurse author. The selected manuscript is judged on the basis of its contribution to thought and or practice in school nursing and the writing clarity of the submission. Virginia Allison, DNP, FNP-BC, MSN, BSN, CSN, is the winner of the JOSN-SAGE First Publication Award by a School Nurse for her manuscript entitled ‘‘Identifying Symptoms of Depression and Anxiety in Students in the School Setting’’ (Allison, Nativio, Mitchell, Ren, & Yuhasz, 2014). She has a baccalaureate in nursing (BSN), a master of science of nursing (MSN) as a certified registered nurse practitioner, and her doctor of nursing practice from the University of Pittsburgh. She has been a certified school nurse for 26 years. Dr. Allison has worked as a school nurse practitioner for the Pittsburgh Public Schools in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for all of her 26 years of school nursing practice. The Pittsburgh Public Schools is an urban district with 54 schools and a total enrollment of over 25,500 students. She is an adjunct assistant professor of Health Promotion and Development at the University of Pittsburgh where she lectures on School Nursing Overview and Pre-participation Sport

The JOSN SAGE Scholarly Writing Award The JOSN SAGE Scholarly Writing Award recognizes excellence in writing and contribution to school nursing. The article has potential to improve school nursing practice, influence school health policy, or contributes to school health administration and collaboration. Inge B. Wissink, PhD, is the winner of the JOSN-SAGE Scholarly Writing Award for her article entitled ‘‘Moral Orientation and Relationships in School and Adolescent Pro- and Antisocial Behaviors: A Multilevel Study’’ (Wissink, Dekovic, Stams, Rutten, & Zijlstra, 2014). Dr. Wissink is an

assistant professor at the Research Institute of Child Development and Education of the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Her interest for adolescent development and risky behaviors began during her studies in psychology at the University of Groningen. A position followed at the University of Amsterdam for a research project on the role of parents and peers in the explanation of adolescent problem behavior with special attention to ethnic background. She finished the PhD project with her dissertation entitled ‘‘Parenting, Friendship Relations and Adolescent Functioning in Different Ethnic Groups’’ at the Research Institute Child Development and Education of the University of Amsterdam. As postdoctoral fellow at Utrecht University, her interest about the role of the school nurse arose as she visited numerous primary schools and studied many parent–teacher conferences about the children’s performance and behavior both at school and at home. In her position since 2009, Dr. Wissink and her research group examines serious problems in children, adolescents, and young adults and families that warrant immediate or future judicial intervention enforced by civil, administrative, or criminal courts. There is also attention to the prevention of serious problems through schools on which the awarded article in the JOSN focuses. Dr. Wissink is married to Koen de Quaij, a physiotherapist, and in 2012, she became the proud mother of their son, Fedde, who is now 2 years old.
