THE NAGPORE MEDICAL SCHOOL. Ekom the report of the seventh session of this school, lor trie on the roll year 1873-74, it appears that 24 students remained at the close of the previous session, and 20 new students were
admitted, making
a
total of 44.
Eleven of these were found
of hospital assistant, 8 disincapacity and inattention, and 2 more recommended for dismissal. The principal, Dr. Beatson, finds that many of the young men admitted into the school possess inferior qualifications, and that native medical pupils do not as a rule derive much benefit from the year's pre-collegiate training in hospitals and dispensaries which the present regulations prescribe. This subject has been referred by the Chief Commissioner for the

practical
Favourable
accounts have been received of the medical subordinates who have been educated in this school, 44 in number; of these only one
had been dismissed from the service.
Rs. 450 were contri-
buted by native gentlemen for the purpose of providing prizes. The whole cost of the school for the year was Rs. 17,322-5-11. While this institution continues to fulfil the
important function affording to the youth of the Central Provinces an avenue for employment in the Government Subordinate Medical Service, it is to be regretted that it is not used as a means of acquiring a knowledge of medicine with a view to private practice. It does not appear from the report that any private students joined the school during the year. In this respect, of
there is
a
great contrast with the Calcutta Vernacular School.
