EDITORS’ NOTE The Proceedings of this meeting mark the continuing evolution of chemical modifiers research. The original meeting on chemical modifiers research was in 1977 at Cambridge, England. That meeting considered mostly hypoxic cell, nitroimidazole radiosensitizer research. Present directions include the development of specific hypoxic cell killing agents and modifiers of glutathione and repair mechanisms. These meetings (seven in the past 14 years) have led to the development of cooperations and friendships among basic scientists and clinicians, with cross fertilization of ideas. Many individuals have attended all seven of the meetings with a maturing of individuals from young investigators, new to the field, to senior investigators leading major laboratories. The Proceedings of these meetings record the history of the events, the science, and the thinking of the times. It is not clear what information will stand the test of time and will be the building blocks to major advances. This meeting could not be held without the cooperation of the co-chairmen, organizing committee, attendees, speakers, and manuscript contributors. Special thanks goes to Suzanne Bohn of the American College of Radiology for continuing loyalty to the excellence of the meeting. Todd H. Wasserman,

Dietmar Siemann, and Paul Workman
