The XIIIth International Congress of Pediatric Laboratory Medicine (ICPLM) in Istanbul, Turkey, on June 20–22, 2014 provides a unique opportunity to discuss advances in the field of Pediatric Laboratory Medicine, and continues a tradition started in 1980 in which specialists in the field gather to exchange ideas. The scientific program for the meeting evolved from the many suggestions of colleagues of the International Advisory Board. A wide array of topics is being presented and should enable a better understanding of the needs of the pediatric laboratory. In this issue of Clinical Biochemistry we have invited the speakers to share their presentations. The papers summarize the talks along with relevant references. It provides a synopsis of the congress and we hope you will find it useful. You will also find abstracts of the poster presentations, some of which have been selected for oral presentation. Meetings such as this one cannot take place without the help of many people. The members of the IFCC Task Force on Pediatric Laboratory medicine (Drs. Klaus Kohse, (Germany) Michael Metz (Australia), Patricia Jones (USA), Sharon Geaghan (USA), Tim Lang (UK)) and our colleagues from Istanbul, (Drs . Feyza Darendeliler, Umit Turkoglu) worked hard to put together this program. We are all grateful for the support of the Organizing Secretariat—MZ Congressi and the IFCC. Several National groups (AACC, CSCC, German Society for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, The Royal College of Pathologists, Turkish Society of Pediatrics, Australian Society of Clinical Chemistry) have provided support for some of our speakers. Several companies

(Waters, Sarstedt, AB-Sciex, Mayo Medical Laboratories, and Instrument Laboratories (Canada)) also provided financial support. Dr. Neumann & Kindler, Labcore, Bochum (Germany) sponsored the poster awards. Last but not least we thank the Editorial staff of Clinical Biochemistry for agreeing to publish these proceedings.

o Instrumentation and processes must be capable of dealing with small samples. o Many diseases may be specific to childhood and may require specialized testing not readily available. o The clinical interpretation of the tests must take into account the changing metabolism of the growing child.

Children are not simply little adults. This phrase is often repeated by many who work with children and is especially true when these children are patients. The inherent differences between children and adults dictate differences in the practice of adult and pediatric laboratory medicine. Laboratory testing in children provide many challenges among which are:
