University of Surrey welcomes its first veterinary students FORTY-EIGHT students from across the UK and Europe have become the first to embark on the five-year Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Science (BVMSci) degree offered by the University of Surrey’s new School of Veterinary Medicine. The research-led degree programme will be delivered in partnership with a number of veterinary practices and veterinary research institutes. This, the university believes, will give the students the chance for ‘real-world, hands-on practical, clinical and research training from the start of their degree, as well as an awareness of the wide range of career opportunities available to veterinary scientists’. The university is constructing a £45 million School of Veterinary Medicine, which will comprise three new buildings with teaching spaces, a large pathology facility with high-containment laboratories, an anatomy laboratory, and a veterinary clinical skills centre for both large and small animals. Construction work began earlier this year and the university expects the new facilities to be complete by late summer 2015. During their first week, the new students were welcomed by the school’s international faculty and took part in 338 | Veterinary Record | October 11, 2014

‘ice-breaker’ activities. They also learned how the degree is intended to help them to develop into professionals with the potential to participate in all aspects of animal and human health. ‘We have warmly welcomed the students to our profession,’ said Gail Anderson, head of veterinary education and

veterinary clinical sciences at the University of Surrey. ‘Their activities during this week focus on building their sense of unity, as this is vital to helping them transition smoothly to the university and on to what will be a demanding but fun course.’ doi: 10.1136/vr.g6073
