NYLON PLATES AND STRAPS FOR INTERNAL FIXATION OF OSTEOPOROTIC BONE

SIR,—Further experience of fixing spiral fractures of the femur around or below metal hip joints by encircling the fracture with nylon straps’ has shown this to be a highly satisfactory technique. In conjunction with Howmedica I am developing nylon plates with side slots for straps and metal studs on the undersurface to grip the bone in cases of osteoporosis when the fracture is transverse. One, two, or even three plates can be strapped around a fractured femur. A typical case with two plates is illustrated in the figure.
