Gastroenterology

Preface

Tracey K. Ritzman, DVM, Diplomate ABVP-Avian & Exotic Companion Mammal Editor

The common saying “time flies” certainly applies to the time between when the first issue of Veterinary Clinics of North America: Exotic Animal Practice, focused on gastroenterology for exotic pets, was published in May of 2005 and this edition for 2014. Over those nine years a great deal has been learned and accomplished in the field of veterinary medicine for exotic animal patients. During this timeframe, our profession has seen several new species-specific specialties come to fruition through the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in both Reptile and Amphibian and Exotic Companion Mammal practice categories. I expect those of you reading this message can quickly think about this timeframe and recall certain events in your lives, both personal and professional, of importance during those years! Gastroenterology continues to be a prominent topic for veterinary clinicians today. The purpose of this issue is to provide an update to the veterinary clinician and animal care professionals on current topics in gastroenterology of avian, reptilian, amphibian, piscine, and exotic companion mammal patients. Just as in the human medical field, gastroenterology remains a dynamic, prominent, and continuously evolving area of medicine and surgery. This publication provides an interesting combination of anatomy, physiology, medicine, and surgery articles pertaining to gastroenterology. I am very fortunate to have a great group of authors from geographical areas throughout the United States as well as from other countries contributing to this issue. The authors are all very dedicated to the veterinary profession and the care and wellness of the animals in their lives. I am honored to be a guest editor for this topic for a second time. I extend my sincere gratitude for the time, efforts, and sacrifices the authors have made in contributing to this publication.
