From the above it will be seen that the death-rate of the European prisoners contrasted favorably every year except during 1872, when it was 67 29 per thousand more than the mortality amongst the free population. It will be observed that during 1873. 1874 and 1876, although there was a death-rate of 27-6, 27'9 and 365 per thousand among the European inhabitant* of Calcutta, there was not a single death among the Eurouean prisoners.
